EATON EXISTS AT THE NEXUS OF HOSPITALITY, IMPACT, CULTURE, AND WELLNESS.
Eaton Workshop is a global hospitality company, built to uplift the human spirit as we collectively pursue a better world for people and planet.
Founded in 2014 by Hong Kong born Asian-American Katherine Lo, Eaton is not only a place for travelers to lay their heads — it’s a place to experience belonging, creativity, and community.
KATHERINE LO
“‘Another World is Possible’ and ‘The Third Place’ are both inspirations for Eaton. A third place outside of home and work where one feels deep belonging. And another world, a better world, one that starts in our imagination but has the possibility of becoming very real…”
MISSION & VISION
Our mission is to transform hospitality into a force for creativity and social and environmental impact.
We are driven by our vision of a kinder world which provides optimal conditions for people and communities to be fulfilled.
Culture & Wellness
Each Eaton offers a diverse range of cultural programming that is deeply locally engaged, yet with an international, multicultural outlook. Eaton’s original programming in the fields of visual art, music, radio, film, talks, readings, theater, and new media explores the many intersectional connections between the sociocultural dialogues of our times. We exist to uplift and support local creatives and innovators, enabling them to elevate their work by engaging with our physical spaces and robust cultural programming. Our driving vision for our profound cultural programming is that Eaton offers optimal conditions for people and communities to thrive, intellectually, socially, culturally, creatively, and spiritually.
Wellness plays just as vital a role in building community as culture. Eaton’s approach to wellness spans across mind, body, and spirit, propelled by the belief that to heal oneself is to heal the collective. Our driving vision for our profound cultural and wellness programming is that Eaton offers optimal conditions for people and communities to thrive.
Social & Environmental Impact
People, planet, and profit hold equal weight at Eaton. We take all three into account when we’re making any decision. Every department, every team member, every location. The Triple Bottom Line is a new movement in business where the bottom line is not only measured by the financial bottom line, but equally by the social and environmental bottom lines. A profound shift in the purpose of business is underway, as businesses become more accountable to society and the environment and its stakeholders. We believe that this approach to business is not only profitable and ethical, but also necessary for the long-term survival of our planet and our species. Eaton is at the forefront of proving that a hospitality business can be both mission-driven and profitable.
Sustainability & Design
Each Eaton design process begins by asking the architect, “How can we build spaces that make communities and our ecosystems better?” While our first two Eatons were renovations of existing buildings, we are innovating new ways to improve their environmental impact, such as installing a rainwater catchment system at Eaton DC that supplies water to toilets on the first and second floors of the hotel and growing a native pollinator garden on our roof. Eaton has achieved the green architectural standard LEED Gold at its existing properties. Eaton HK is certified Platinum under EarthCheck standards, while Eaton DC has joined Regenerative Travel as its first urban regenerative hotel meeting its social and environmental standards. All construction, vendors, furniture, and supplies are chosen based on universal certifications such as Cradle 2 Cradle, Greenscreen, Greenguard, LabelSTEP Fair Trade, and Good Weave Fair Trade, and the sustainability of each item within the hotel, big or small, is thoughtfully considered.
Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
“Understanding the diversity of global communities is core to Eaton’s hospitality practice. Creating a sense of welcome is what our guests feel when they enter our spaces. That's a direct result of the work we’ve put into Eaton’s unique EDIT (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, & Thriving) curriculum that provides everyone at Eaton with the training and insight needed to build a better world. The results speak for themselves: two-thirds of our management team are people of color and two-thirds are women. We’ve been certified by the DC Mayor’s Trans Employment program as well as Hong Kong’s Most Inclusive Places to Work.”
-Sheldon Scott, Head of Purpose, Eaton Workshop
OUR VALUES
“Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.” -Arundhati Roy
Principle
Our founding charge was to push the boundaries of the hospitality industry to imagine something greater than a hotel that reflects this rapidly changing world. We believe that a hotel can contribute to a better world. It is with this optimism that we build our hotels into spaces for dreaming of and acting towards a kinder world.
Behavior
Our diverse leaders come from backgrounds in hospitality, business, design, art, music, impact, and wellness, knowing that all play equal parts in Eaton meeting its greatest potential as a catalyst for a better world.
We nurture emerging creatives and innovators in each locale, knowing that ideas that make the world a better place have to start somewhere. They might as well start at Eaton.
“Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.” -Chief Seattle
Principle
We deeply consider people and planet when making any decision because we believe in the deep interconnectedness of the human family and all life on Earth. Nothing we hold sacred can exist without a healthy planet. We understand that our people, our planet, and our prosperity are all connected.
Behavior
We track and report our environmental and social impact through independent third-party certifications such as LEED, EarthCheck, and Regenerative Travel, in order to ensure that our operation aligns with our values. We examine all harm and find ways to mitigate and improve.
We support partners, curate programming, and tell stories that are mission-driven and are guided by a compassionate and intersectional ethos of social and environmental impact.
“‘The Third Place’ was an inspiration for Eaton, a place outside of home and work where one feels at home. A sense of belonging has always been an important value I've held close to my heart, from my bicultural upbringing to my interdisciplinary training. It is this desire to belong which drives my life’s work of the last decade, to use the resources available to me to create a platform for people to belong - and not only to belong, but thrive.” -Katherine Lo, Founder
Principle
Eaton is designed to be a Third Place, where all feel welcome and at home. It is a sanctuary for all, a home away from home, a nurturing place free of judgement where you can be your true self, a place providing optimal conditions to work toward a healthier society, a healthier planet, and a healthier you. Eaton is comprised of a community of guests, members, staff, collaborators, and neighbors in the cities where we operate. We hold a deep nostalgia for analog elements that make us feel at home, like books, vinyl records, stories, food, and art.
Behavior
Our programming, partnerships, and storytelling are based on an intersectional, holistic approach. We believe that the environment, multiculturalism, humanitarianism, and wellness are deeply interconnected, and they all matter.
We want people to bring their whole selves to Eaton, and we create inclusive spaces by accommodating any ability level, gender expression, cultural background, or other identity. We strive to make our spaces safer through constantly educating ourselves on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and seeking feedback from our community members.
“With great power comes great responsibility.” -Uncle Ben, Spiderman (2002)
Principle
We hold ourselves accountable to not only our shareholders, but also our stakeholders: the community around us, the working people who make our endeavor possible, and Mother Earth.
Behavior
We commit to doing the right thing even when no one is looking. We aspire to lead in the hospitality industry by example, act with integrity, transparency, and humility, and prioritize collective success and well-being over individual gain.
We know that our impact on the world radiates out from our practices as a company, so we commit to practicing our values in our daily work lives.
We have come a long way, and we have to go further. We continually reflect on how our path aligns with our mission and values, seeking out constructive opportunities for growth. We commit to a process of constant improvement and honesty as we navigate difficult conversations and push bold changes on “business as usual”.
“A plurality is some kind of whole beyond its parts.” -Aristotle
Principle
Human progress towards a better world happens best when it’s a combination of parts: public policy, art and culture, advocacy and nonprofits, corporations, and academia. Eaton is but one actor in something much bigger, as we all work towards building a kinder future. We respect the long-standing legacies of what has been built by so many to get us to this point.
Behavior
We acknowledge the culture and communities flourishing in each location that we operate in. We prioritize uplifting local creatives and advocates, offering Eaton as a container and facilitator for their ongoing work. We recognize and partner with the Indigenous and historical land-based communities in each region that we operate, as much as possible. We honor the legacy of our communities’ predecessors and give flowers to our elders.
Locations
Eaton Workshop is global in outlook, yet local in community engagement. Eaton DC opened in downtown Washington DC in September 2018, followed by Eaton Hong Kong in the Jordan neighborhood of Hong Kong in November 2018.
Eaton DC is Eaton Workshop’s flagship location in downtown Washington DC. It is inspired by the historic movements that made the world a better place, from the suffragettes to the Women's March, from civil rights to today’s climate change movement. Our design, which references the history of the building as a bus terminal and printing press, evokes the nostalgia of an analog era while presenting a green and culture-filled sanctuary on K Street. A custom-designed sculpture acknowledges the indigenous land Eaton DC is built on, while the naming of its rooms honors Black histories of DC. Eaton DC offers a cinema, radio station, library, holistic wellness center, members workspace, music venue rooftop bar, literary bar, exhibition space, a creator’s room, event spaces, restaurant, and coffee shop.
Eaton HK is Eaton Workshop’s original hometown location in Kowloon, Hong Kong. It is inspired by the neon-lit nostalgia that defines its neighborhood of Jordan made iconic in so many Hong Kong films. Our design references the gritty romantic appeal of Wong Kar Wai’s 1990s arthouse films shot in our neighborhood, while music and cultural programming provide outlets for creativity and communion. Eaton HK offers a cinema auditorium, radio station, members workspace, music venue cocktail bar and terrace, two-story food hall, art gallery, event space, Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant, curated retail shop, and a rooftop pool.
