Initiated by Tiff Chun and Mavis Ng, ”Second Home” is a short term art project that extends from concepts of “displacement” and “strangers”, aiming to connect Filipino migrant domestic workers (MDWs) and Hong Kong locals. It is one of the 10 selected projects of the Open Call of Art-Is-Land: Young Teaching Artist & Art Administrator Training Programme. A few months ago, Second Home published a zine that highlights their activities, the team‘s reflections, and features video work, crochet handicraft, poetry from the migrant workers.
The team who put this project together came from moving image and art backgrounds. They spent 10 weekends visiting gathering places of Filipino MDW and had conversations with them about personal growth, family, loved ones and dreams. The result was this compilation of their stories and perspectives, told through street interviews, but also through crocheting, short documentary workshops, and poetry gatherings. The zine is available in English and Traditional Chinese.
At Eaton, we hope that our physical and digital spaces can be inhabited as platforms for our communities to thrive intellectually, socially, culturally, creatively, and spiritually. This coming Saturday (October 13, 2024), longest-standing charitable shelter for distressed women migrant workers in Hong Kong Bethune House will be hosting “Raise the Roof — SOS music show for Bethune House” with musicians and artists to throw a party for solidarity. Read more about the event and RSVP here.

I am Maria!“ – How Film and Television Culture, and Media in Hong Kong Represent MDWs” by Tiffany Hui, “Examining the Beauty and Creativity of Women‘s Domestic Labor through Literary Works” by Shakira Lam and “‘Yaya’ the Filipino MDW – The Result of Economic Symbiosis between Hong Kong and the Philippines” by Shanelle Lim and Tiffany Hui.
