New Pessimism: Tropical Frontier

From 19 March until 30 April, Eaton HK's art gallery Tomorrow Maybe will present New Pessimism: Tropical frontier, bringing together a selection of works by Indonesian artists Natasha Tontey and Riar Rizaldi. The exhibition is based on their research of social, technological, and ecological issues rooted in the landscape and social dynamics of Indonesia. Inspired by b-grade media, popular culture, social change makings and indigenous movements, Natasha and Riar explore the aesthetic of refusal, the campiness of social tension, and the horror imagery of social ecology in the tropical frontier. 

Natasha Tontey is an multidisciplinary artist and designer who has just been listed as ‘Future Great 2023’ by ArtReview. Her works have been shown in transmediale (Berlin), Auto Italia (London), Leeum Museum of Art (Seoul), etc, and are now showing in Singapore Biennale 2022. Riar Rizaldi is an award winning artist and filmmaker. His works have been shown at various international film festivals (including Locarno, IFFR, Viennale, etc) as well as Centre Pompidou Paris, Istanbul Biennial, Venice Architecture Biennale amongst others.
