Raise the Roof— SOS music show for Bethune House
Bethune House is the longest-standing charitable shelter for distressed women migrant workers in Hong Kong. Established in 1986, Bethune House has been housing more than 680 women in need annually. Under the current laws and social conditions, women migrant workers sometimes are faced with unreasonable and abusive work environments, which would cause them to find themselves homeless, jobless, vulnerable, distressed, or abused, and with a long legal process awaiting. They are left with no source of income while their ongoing cases are being pursued or while they are clearing their names from accusations. Bethune House to them is not only a shelter during the resolution of their cases, but also a place, a home, that transverse nationalities and a community to connect with and nurture mutual aid among women.
This year, a hopeful grant has unfortunately fallen through and Bethune House needs public support to continue the shelter and their work supporting women migrant workers. Sharing the same spirit of conviviality and mutual aid as BH, we are presenting “Raise the Roof — SOS music show for Bethune House” with musicians and artists to throw a party for solidarity. In the daytime session, migrant writers will collaborate with local musicians and artists to share poetry and stories about migration and the grassroots. For the nighttime session, we will have independent singers, singer-songwriters, and DJs generating connections and energy with music and beats—raising the roof for Bethune House!
